Canopic Jars

The Canopic Jar workshops is suitable for age 6+ and requires a 3 day residency on site. The ancient art of canopic jars is Egyptian in origin and is presented to the children with visual and historical information making this workshop ideal for developing historical knowledge and and introduction to ancient cultures.

Because of the techniques involved in producing a canopic jar, this residency can be linked to your DT, history and art syllabuses. Differentiation can be achieved by using alternative techniques for creating the jars. Bellow there are images of jars made from wire frames and balloon paper mache.

During the workshop the children will be taught about the history of canopic jars and how they were linked to the Egyptians belief in an afterlife. The participants will be encouraged to think of the jars as 'memory boxes' for them to keep something special in.

The theme for the lids can vary. The examples shown here were inspired by the children's star signs and personalities.

Imagery is used throughout the workshop ranging from slides to posters to help the children with their understanding of authentic colour and shape
